After the surge of motorcycle popularity in the 1970s, there was also a surge of motorcycle accidents. The number of motorcycles on the road was small and drivers weren't seeing them. In reaction, motorcycles in the U.S. were wired for the low beam headlight to be on whenever the engine was running.

This certainly helped reduce accidents, however, it was realized that daytime lights also help you see cars. Many cars began being equipped with daytime running lights, causing the daytime-illuminated motorcycle headlights to be less effective.
