Basic Guidelines for Choosing a Motorcycle Helmet
1) Choose a Motorcycle Helmet Type
Full Face Helmets cover your entire head and face. The shell wraps around your cheeks, jaw and chin and an acrylic visor covers your area of vision. Full face helmets are vented and secured with a chin strap. This type of motorcycle helmet offers the most protection.
Open Face Helmets are similar to a full face helmet, but does not cover the face fully. The face is left open, with the shell covering the brow line to the base of the neck. Many open face helmets also include a visor, or a visor can be purchased separately.
Modular Helmets aka Flip-Up Helmets, offer a choice between using the helmet as either a full face helmet or open face helmet and is the most versatile type of motorcycle helmet.
Half Helmets just cover the top half of the head and some models also cover the ears and part of the cheeks.
All of the motorcycle helmets sold from BikerHiway are either DOT Approved or Snell Approved.
Many motorcycle helmets come with additional features. Vents are often offered and can help you keep cool while riding. Vents can be located on top of the helmet, on the face, or on the chin, all allowing you to cool different parts of your head. Other comfort features you might encounter are padded straps and different, interchangeable padding shapes to fit your head.
2) Try Your New Motorcycle Helmet On
Once you receive the motorcycle helmet you purchase from BikerHiway, try it on and make sure the helmet is comfortable. Leave it on for a good 15 minutes to make sure that the helmet is not too tight or too loose. A good sizing test is to shake your head. A well-fit motorcycle helmet will hold snugly.
A Full Face, Open Face, or Modular Helmet should grip your cheeks and head slightly and should not too loose.
A Half Helmet should grip your head slightly.
